The Methely Plum tree is a fruiting tree that grows to heights of 20′ with spreads up to 20′. This tree grows at a medium rate, with height increases of 13–24″ per year. The Methely is a cultivar of Japanese plum. Blooms in early spring, profuse with clusters of sweetly fragrant, delicate white flowers. Methley is an attractive tree that is small, upright and spreading. It produces heavy, annual crops of juicy, sweet, red purple fruit that ripens from late May to early July, depending on location. The fruit is sweet and mild with a distinctive flavor—good for fresh eating or jelly .
The Methley plum grows in a wide variety of soil types and has some tolerance for heavy and waterlogged soils. It prefers a well-drained, loamy, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil. Tolerates heat well.
This is a self-fertile tree, meaning it doesn’t require another tree to produce fruit. But planting two or more is recommended for a better crop. This variety also serves as a good pollinator for other early bearing Japanese varieties. Requires 200-250 chill hours.
Full sun is recommended.
