The Black Gum (Tupelo) (Nyssa Sylvatica) is a terrific landscaping choice.  A medium rate grower, with height increases of anywhere from less than 12-24 in per yer. Matures to a height of 30-50′ with a spread of 20-30′. Featuring various hues of yellow, orange, bright red and purple, its foliage is a stand-out of the autumn season. Its distinctive bark, which resembles alligator hide, adds visual and textural interest. The black tupelo grows well in in acidic, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, silty loam and well-drained soils.

Full sun and partial shade are best for this tree, meaning it prefers a minimum of four hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight each day.
