Althea (Hibiscus syriacus), also known as Rose of Sharon, is a hardy hibiscus shrub. – Plant shrubs 6 feet apart in well-drained full sun locations. Althea grows up to 12 feet tall with a 6- to 10-foot spread. The shrub is covered in blooms from summer to fall. Can be planted in a wide range of soil types and pH levels, although acidic soil is better than alkaline. Prune the Althea in late winter or early spring to promote new growth and maintain a larger flower size. Make cuts above a bud on the branch. This shrub is good for privacy barrier.
